Introductory Activity Read
the story Humphrey the Lost Whale A True Story by Wendy Tokuda and
Richard Hall. Ask students to make a prediction about what will happen
to Humphrey next. A video from Reading Rainbow is also available
which also has actual footage of the rescue.
Enabling Activities The students will go to a web site about whales and work with a partner to answer the questionnaire provided. (Teacher should make copies of the questionnaire ahead of time). http://www.zoomwhales.com/subjects/whales/activities/findit/whales.shtml Then have the students choose a specific whale from the site to write a paragraph about, and print the information about their whale. http://www.zoomwhales.com/subjects/whales/ Using the whale paragraph graphic organizer, the students will fill in each section to build their whale paragraph. (Three pages in attachments will form the whale). For the topic sentence click here. For the first two details click here. For
the last detail and the conclusion click here.
Culminating Activities Students will use the information they found on the web site to write a paragraph about the whale that they chose. It can be handwritten or word processed. This can be put together to form a class book about whales. A web site that has matching, concentration, and word search games can be used as a culminating activity. http://www.quia.com/jg/65536.html
Rubric
The
students were asked to write a paragraph as a pre-test. After using
the web site, their paragraphs about whales were scored on the same rubric.
