Third Grade
Language Arts 1.0

Students write clear and coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea.  Their writing shows they consider the audience and purpose.  Students progress through the stages of the writing process (e.g., prewriting, drafting, revising, editing successive versions)

Instructional Objectives

Students will create a single paragraph:

  • Develop a topic sentence.
  • Include simple supporting facts and details
  • Use reference materials (e.g., dictionary, encyclopedia, internet)
  • Revise drafts to improve the coherence and logical progression of ideas by using an established rubric.
Student Activities

The students will choose a whale that they would like to learn more about.  They will research their whale using the web site provided.  They will then write a simple paragraph about their whale.

Introductory Activity

Read the story Humphrey the Lost Whale A True Story by Wendy Tokuda and Richard Hall.  Ask students to make a prediction about what will happen to Humphrey next.  A video from Reading Rainbow is also available which also has actual footage of the rescue.

Enabling Activities

The students will go to a web site about whales and work with a partner to answer the questionnaire provided.  (Teacher should make copies of the questionnaire ahead of time).
