Introductory
Activity
Begin the lesson with a discussion of the idea of the "Afterlife". Explain
the importance of the Ka and Ba spirits, and how they relate to mummification
and the burial process. Continue the discussion in detail on how mummification
has evolved over time (e.g. buried in the sand vs. chemical embalming with
linen).Introduce the funerary workshops, the funeral procession, the "Opening
of the Mouth Ceremony", and "The Final Rituals".
Enabling
Activity(ies)
Teacher initially displays a model of the the final product so students
will have an idea of the outcome as well as the teacher expectations.
Teacher will then demonstrate how to form pieces of aluminum foil (or shape
the balloon) into a desired shape (one that represents a mummy).
The teacher will then tear and dip strips of newspaper in the starch. Next,
he/she will demonstrate how to remove the excess starch from the newspaper
by running their fingers over the paper and applying it to the mummy .
After mummy has dried, the teacher will explain how to paint the mummy
while providing an array of examples for the burial mask.
Culminating
Activies
Students
will turn in completed project to teacher for a grade and return
to student page on the web site to finish the remaining tasks. Students
will answer five questions in paragraph form relating to this activity
for assessment. After submitting their answers, they will read the information
in the Closure section, and finally they will explore other egyptian
sites in Going Further.
