Introduction
Students will discover ancient Egypt by reading the book "Mummies in the Morning".  Students will be able to identify characters, setting and plot.  Students will learn about the history and customs of Ancient Egypt.  They will be introduced to new vocabulary.   Students will be given the opportunity to make predictions in the story.  The will also experience problem solving using clues to solve the story's mystery.

Instructional Objectives
    1.  After reading the story student will be able to identify the characters, setting and plot/problem of the story.

     2.  Students will improve reading comprehension by learning new vocabulary such as pharaoh, mummy, pyramid, scroll, sarcophagus, hieroglyphs, capstone, caravan, cartouche and afterlife.  They will identify the words on a multiple choice worksheet available on this web site.  

     3.    Students will complete graphic organizers to brainstorm description of the characters.

     4.  Students will be able to follow a simple "How to make a mummy" worksheet on this web site. 

      5.  Student will visit web sites to get a better understanding of the geographic attributes of the Egyptian desert and pyramids.  They reinforce the term "setting" by cutting a triangular construction sheet and assembling a 3-D pyramid.  The pyramid will be placed on a map made from a paper plate.  

      6.    Students will understand the concept of solving problems using clues after making their own name cartouche.

      7.   Students will be able to write narratives about their reactions to the story in their literature log.

      8.  Students will take a final review test....

Student Activities

Students will read the story "Mummies in the Morning"  and  will discuss plot, setting and characters.  

Introductory Activity

Students will discuss what they know about Egypt.  They will look at picture of pyramids using links.  

Students will discuss the book they are about to read by looking at the title, graphics on cover and structure of book.  Students will notice the book is divided into chapters.  Each chapter has an introductory title. Students will make predictions about what they  think the story is about.

After reading the first chapter students will record their thoughts in a reaction log shaped like a camel.  The cover of the log will be made with furry material to resemble the camel's hair.    

Enabling Activities

Students will write their name in hieroglyphs using an Egyptian hieroglyph translator at http://www.eyelid.co.uk/e-name.htm

Culminating Activity
Students will "wrap" their own mummy.   The mummy will be a large tootsie roll, the wrap will be rolled fruit candy.  After reading the last clue from the scroll found in the vase, students will know what happened to the mummy.  Then they will make their mummy and say good-bye to their friends in Egypt just as the main characters in the story have done and return to the "present".

Introductory Activity
