Introduction
Out in front of the classroom are two planter boxes, large, that only contain a couple of trees and a lot of weeds.  We are going to create a landscape design for them.  After the designs are submitted, the class will vote on one, funding will be obtained and as a class we will plant them.

Standards Addressed

Ninth Grade

Math Area, Perimeter and Volume
1.2 Construct and read drawings and models made to scale.

2.0 Students compute the perimeter, area and volume of common geometric objects and use the results to find measures of less common objects. They know how perimeter, area, and volume are affected by changes of scale:

2.1 Use formulas routinely for finding the perimeter and areas of basic two-dimensional figures and the surface area and volume of basic three-dimensional figures, including rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, squares, triangles, circles, prisms, and circular cylinders.

2.2 Estimate and compute the area of more complex or irregular two- and three-dimensional figures by breaking the figures down into more basic geometric objects.

2.3 Compute the length of the perimeter, the surface area of the faces, and the volume of a three-dimensional object built from rectangular solids. Understand that when the lengths of all dimensions are multiplies by a scale factor, the surface area is multiplied by the square of the scale factor and the volume is multiplies by the cube of the scale factor.

Instructional Objectives
Through the course of this lesson, students will learn a real application of the concept of area, volume and perimeter.  They will learn to research the web and other sources to find information on plants that will grow in the area, how much space is needed for each plant and what will look good together.  It will also give students a chance to contribute something lasting back to the school.

Student Activities

Introductory Activity
Students will be introduced the formulas needed to compute the various areas in the planter boxes.  Students will practice using various measuring devices and converting differing measurements.

Enabling Activity(ies)
Students will be given time in class to decide on their groups, 1 – 4 people per group, and who is responsible for what part of the project.  They will divide up the areas of research and development.  They will be given time to obtain the measurements that they will need.  They can practice figuring area using different shaped drawings and cutouts.

See Rubric

Culminating Activity
The culminating activity will be to do the actual landscaping of the boxes as a class, using the design that was voted on by the class.

Assessment

Each group will present their plan to the class.  They must have a visual presentation that includes the design, plants needed and the cost breakdown of all materials needed.  All members of the class will grade the project in the following areas:

Presentation

Communication

Participation

Overall design

This will be averaged with the teachers evaluation of the project.
