5.8 Students trace the colonization, immigration, and settlement patterns of  the American people from 1789 to mid-1800s, with emphasis on the role of the economic incentives, effects of the physical and political geography, and transportation systems.

     1. Discuss the modes of transportation from east coast to west coast......... 
     2. Name the states and territories that existed in 1850 and identify their locations and 
         major geographic features............ 
      4. Discuss the experiences of the settlers on the overland trails to the West..........
                a) location of the routes
                 b) life in the territories at the end of these trails

Instructional Objectives
 
       1.  After viewing the trials map students will be able to identify the different trails that settlers  took in the 1800s.
       2.  After viewing trail map and information sites, students will be able to identify and describe major land forms, forts, and cities along the trail in the 1800s.
       3. Students will be able to describe the new forms of transportation in the 1800s. 
       4.  Students will write a journal describing a trail they travel, geographical features seen, identify states and territories traveled through, and what life was like at the end of the trail.

Introductory Activity

Pre-Quiz

K-W-L-Knowledge Table to identify what students know about the trails west in the 1800s.

Enabling Activity

Students will see people and places along the Oregon Trail. Pre-Quiz

On the map of the U.S., students will mark on the map the different road routes that were developed by 1860. 
Students will visit the Moving West Map and be able to click on the wagons to visit sites about that trail. 

Culminating Activity

Post-Test 

Student Project: Students choose one of the trails they learned about through the enabling activities. They  create a journal writing describing the trail they traveled, the geographical features seen, states and territories traveled through and what life was like at the end of the trail.
