Lesson Plan for Abraham Lincoln - Grade 2 (or primary grade)

Abraham Lincoln's life is a social studies subject studied by all primary grades. This is linked to a  fun interactive web site and the kids love it.  This is a 10 day lesson plan which includes an interactive online quiz.

Standard: History Social Science 
PEOPLE WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Students in grade two explore the lives of actual people who make a difference in their everyday lives and learn the stories of extraordinary people from history whose achievements have touched them, directly or indirectly. 

2.5 Students understand the importance of individual action and character and explain how heroes from long ago and the recent past have made a difference in others' lives (e.g., from biographies of Abraham Lincoln, Louis Pasteur, Sitting Bull, George Washington Carver, Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Golda Meir, Jackie Robinson, Sally Ride).

 

Objectives

  • Students will show improvement from the pre-test to post test
  • Students will recall basic biographical information about Lincoln. 
  • Students will  participate in discussion about how Lincoln has made a difference in their lives (no slavery/ fair laws) 
  • Students will complete an 8 section story map 
  • Students will demonstrate and apply their knowledge by doing a venn diagram comparing Lincoln to themselves or another previously studied person such as King or Washington

  Student Activities
Students  will make a  penny medallion as a way to introduce Lincoln. They will  take a pretest , listen to several read aloud stories, and read a story themselves.  They will apply their knowledge by doing several activities such as a venn diagram and a story map .  Along the way they will  access  the internet for further  info and photos. They will take a quiz on the internet with a follow up paper post test. They will end the week with an art project. 

  Introductory Activities
1. On day 1 each student makes  a penny medallion. Ask  students  who is on the penny and what they know about Lincoln. Accept all  comments.  Hand out penny sheet questions. 
2. Give the multiple choice pretest to all students.

Enabling Activities
1. Every day teacher reads aloud a book about Lincoln. 
2. On day  2 pair up students to read "Lincoln's Hat" . 25% of the class will also access  World Book software on the imac classroom launcher and search for Lincoln info.
3. On day   3 students reread "Lincoln's Hat".  Students begin 8 section story  map on "Lincoln's Hat". 25% of the class will access Word Book.
4. On day  4 students go to the 2 library  computers and access linked sites in  groups of 5 (15 minutes per group), but not  the online quiz. 25% of  the class will access World Book. Students reread Lincoln's Hat in pairs and finish the story map. 
5. On day 5 students take a field trip to the middle school computer  lab to access linked sites and do the online quiz.
6.  On  day  6 the remaining students access World Book. Teacher charts  student   responses   about what they learned, making sure they discuss   why Lincoln  has made a difference in their lives.
7. On days 7-8 students create mini Lincoln books.
8. On day 9 students complete a venn diagram, comparing Lincoln to Washington or to themself. 
 

Culminating Activities
1. On day 10, give  posttest to all students.
2. End the unit  by making Lincoln hats and/or pretzel log cabins.

Results

Pretest results ranged from 30%-100% with 11 out of 18 students scoring below 80%. Posttest results ranged from 50%-100% with 17 out of 18 students scoring 80% or better. View the PowerPoint presentation to view the chart, and review this project.
