Introduction:

This page has been created to assist educators and students in mastering the periodic table in accordance to the standards set by the state of California.  This web page and the information found with in it  has been created to be used along with traditional material.  You will find several activities and sites that are standard driven and standard specific.

Standards:  Atomic and Molecular Structure

1. The Periodic Table displays the elements in increasing atomic number and shows how

periodicity of the physical and chemical properties of the elements relates to atomic

structure.  As a basis for understanding this concept, students know:

( Press on the arrow of the appropriate standard to take you to lessons and links that will help you master that standard)

How to relate the position of an element in the Periodic Table to its atomic number and atomic
           mass.

How to use the Periodic Table to identify metals, semimetals, nonmetals,  and halogens.

How to use the Periodic Table to identify alkali metals, alkaline earth  metals and transition
metals, and trends in ionization energy, electronegativity, and the relative sizes of ions and
           atoms.

How to use the Periodic Table to determine the number of electrons available for bonding.

Objectives:

1.  Students will be able to relate the position of an element in the  Periodic
Table to its atomic number and atomic mass.

2.  Students will be able to  use the Periodic Table to identify metals,
     semimetals, nonmetals,  and halogens.

3.  Students will be able to use the Periodic Table to identify alkali metals,
alkaline earth  metals and transition metals, and trends in ionization
energy, electronegativity, and the relative sizes of ions and atoms.

4.  Students will be able to use the Periodic Table to determine the number of
     electrons available for bonding.
