There is no greater nobility in being
superior to anyone else, the true nobility lies
in being superior to your previous self.

Introduction

This lesson will show your students how to understand fractions concretely.  They will be able to represent fractions conceptually and symbolically.  They will be using programs that will show the students equivalent fractions.  They will be able to compare fractions represented by drawings and add and subtract simple fractions.

Subject: Math
Topic:

Standards Addressed

3.0 Students understand the relationship between whole numbers, simple fractions and decimals.

3.1 Compare fractions represented by drawings or concrete materials to show equivalency and to add and subtract simple fractions in context (e.g. 1/2 of a pizza is the same amount as 2/4 of another pizza that is the same size;  show that 3/8 is larger than 1/4).

3.2 Add and subtract simple fractions (e.g., determine that 1/8 + 3/8 is the same as 1/2).

Instructional Objectives
  1. Students will be able to compare and order fractions while using > ,<, and =.  (1/6 < 1/3)
  2. Students will be able to identify equivalent fractions. (1/2 of 6 = 3)
  3. Students will be able to identify a fraction of a number. (1/2 of 6 = 3)
  4. Students will be able to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. (3/7 + 2/7 = 5/7)

Student Activities

Students will engage in several websites that will enable them to better understand fractions. Through the use of some tutorial websites they will be able to meet the instructional objectives.

Introductory Activity
The students will be asked, "What part of the pot of gold they would like to have?"  After that they will take a pretest. They are then going to go to the common fractions conversion table to check their  answer to the question (pot of gold).  They will then go through several websites that will teach them to compare and order fractions, identify equivalent fractions, identify a fraction of a number and add and subtract like fractions. After all the lessons have been done they will then take the post test. They can then apply their skills on a game of war.

Link To Students Page
Students will visit a  link to become familiar with basic vocabulary and examples of fractions.  After the students have visited the website they will "cash in" their answers to the introductory question (Students Page).

Enabling Activity(ies)

Day 1
1. Administer pre-assessment test on fractions. (PreTest Link)

2.Students will be asked to pick what fraction of a pot of gold they want.  They then will cast their vote into a pot.  (Look at student page). Vocabulary Page

3. Students can check their answers in the Common fractions conversion table.

Day 2

4. Have the students start with Introduction to Fractions.

5. Students will go to Comparing Fractions (<,>,=).  (Note: Make sure the students read the examples on the red screen.) You might want to discuss the examples.

Day 3

6. Equivalent Fractions Drill and Equivalent Fractions Game (Advanced). After this activity students may draw several example of equivalent fractions and share with the class.

Day 4

7. Teacher Directed. Explain that finding a fraction of a larger number involves division. "Solia has 12 shoes to polish, she has shined 1/4 of them." In this case they will divide the number of shoes into four groups. 12 / 4 = 3. .Fraction of a Number  (Print out this worksheet)

8. Collect pictures from magazines and newspapers that display multiple objects or items. Laminate and use washable markers to show fractions.
e.g., What fraction of the birds are flying? What fraction of the cars are in the parking lot?

Day 5

9. Addition of Fractions and Subtracting Fractions. (Note: Make sure the students read the examples on the red screen.) You might want to discuss the examples.

Culminating Activity

Day 6

10.* Play a game of war.  War Game & Instructions

Day 7

11.Administer the Post Test Link .  Make sure that you print it out before hand.

Assessment
Eighty percent of the students will pass the post test with eighty-five percent accuracy.
