Introduction
Insert a brief overview of your lesson plan. Remember teachers are your target audience on this page. You might want to edit this section after you have finished designing your lesson. At that time you'll have a better idea of your lesson plan highlights.

Science: Focus on Life Sciences

(3)3.  Adaptations in physical structure or behavior may improve an organism's chance for survival. As a basis for understanding this concept:

c. Students know living things cause changes in the environment in which they live:  some of these changes are detrimental to the organism or other organisms, and some are beneficial.

d.  Students know when the environment changes, some plants and animals survive and reproduce; others die or move to new locations.
1.0 Writing Strategies
Students write clear and coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea.
Their writing shows they consider the audience and purpose. Students progress through
the stages of the writing process (e.g., prewriting, drafting, revising, editing successive
versions).
Organization and Focus
1.1 Create a single paragraph:
a. Develop a topic sentence.
b. Include simple supporting facts and details.
Penmanship
1.2 Write legibly in cursive or joined italic, allowing margins and correct spacing between
letters in a word and words in a sentence.
Research
1.3 Understand the structure and organization of various reference materials (e.g., dictio-nary,
thesaurus, atlas, encyclopedia).
Evaluation and Revision
1.4 Revise drafts to improve the coherence and logical progression of ideas by using an
established rubric.

  • Instructional Objectives
    • Class will brainstorm  what we already know about poison dart frogs.
    • Students will formulate questons about poison dart frogs. (what we want to know)
    • Class will categorize their questions into groups such as food, habitat, defense.
    • Students will use links to the internet to research their questions.
    • Students will listen to books about the rainforest and about poison dart frogs and discuss interdependence between poison dart frogs and epiphytes.
    • Students will write answers found.
    • Class will organize the answers found into a class report (what we've learned)
    • Students will write their own report or copy the class report.
    • Students will read Rainforest Secrets by Arthur Dorros and The  Great Kapok Tree by             .
    • Students will create paper bromeliads with poison dart frogs inside of them.
    • Students will read about and discuss the life cycle of the poison dart frog.
    • Students will create a display demonstrating the life cycle of the poison dart frog.

    Introductory Activity

Have the students read Rainforest Secrets in pairs.  Discuss layers of the rainforest and make a class diagram.  Students may add animals in their appropriate levels as they have time.

Have the class brainstorm What We Know About Poison Dart Frogs.  Keep this chart posted throughout the unit.

Have students work in pairs.  They are to formulate at least two questions that they have about poison dart frogs and write them on sentence strips.  Have them share their questions with the class, then come up with categories under which the questions could belong, such as food, habitat, defense, life cycle.  Help the students to organize all of the questions under these headings.

Have each student select questions(s) that they will research.  They may link to the following sites for information.
