Introduction
Students will explore different web sites in order define interests, abilities, and aptitudes for different careers.  The students will do a collection of activities that will help develop career goals and set a path leading to those goals.  Cross curricular activities will be used to help the student examine different possibilities and then create evidence of work in career portfolio. The student will also do a multimedia presentation of the Career Portfolio.  Assignments are part of the requirements for graduation.

Instructional Objectives

Career development is an ongoing process through which learners integrate their personal, family, school, work, and community experiences to facilitate career and lifestyle choices.

    Students will develop: 
    1. an open attitude toward a variety of occupations and types of work 
    2. an understanding of the relationship between work and leisure, work and the family, and work and one's interests and abilities 
    3. an understanding of the role of technology in the workplace and in daily life 
    4. an understanding of the relationship between work and learning 
    5. an understanding of the changes taking place in the economy, society, and the job market 
    6. an ability to set goals and reflect on the importance of lifelong learning 
    7. an ability to prepare for multiple roles throughout life. 
Students will develop self-awareness and career awareness through :
    1. interest surveys, aptitude surveys, and possible future goals 
    2. technology in the workplace and in our daily lives 
    3. social, family, and economic changes 
    4. future education options 
    5. career clusters 
    6. lifestyles 
    7. external influences on decision making
Students will be provided with opportunities to prepare for and make appropriate and realistic decisions. Students  will relate self-awareness to their goals and aspirations. They will also learn many basic skills and attitudes that are required for an effective transition into adulthood. This will assist in preparing them to be responsible and self directed throughout their lives.  Students will learn the basics of:
    1. entrepreneurial education 
    2. employability skills (e.g., how to find and keep a job) 
    3. the importance of lifelong education and career planning 
    4. involvement in the community 
    5. the many different roles that an individual can play throughout life 
    6. the dynamics of the working world (e.g., unions, unemployment, supply and demand, Pacific Rim, free trade)
Students will further refine career goals through an examination of personal interests and skills using a variety of career exploration opportunities (e.g., job shadowing).  They will learn:
    1. dynamics of the changing work force and changing influences on the job market (e.g., developing technology and economic trends) 
    2. job keeping and advancement skills (interpersonal skills needed in the workplace, employment standards) 
    3. occupational health issues and accessing health support services 
      ways to get funding for further education
Work experience provides students with opportunities to participate in a variety of workplace situations to help prepare them for the transition to a work environment.  Work experience will also provide students with opportunities to:
  1. connect what they learn in school with the skills and knowledge needed in the workplace and society in general 
  2. experience both theoretical and applied learning 
  3. explore identified career directions

Student Activities
Students will embark on a learning adventure that will help them set career goals and plan for the future. 
 

Introductory Activity

Students will print a copy of the graduation requirements for the Yuba County Career Preparatory Charter School.  Students will then do a self assessment.

Enabling Activities
Students will journey through the "My future?" adventure at their grade level.  The students will need to use web- based resources to complete the activities.  Each activity is designed to formulate and explore future goals or help complete a careers proficiency graduation requirement.

Culminating Activity

Students will prepare and give a 10 minute multimedia presentation  illustrating their career exploration and goal setting activities before a panel of community members and educators. They will have a well-designed career portfolio ready to show prospective employers.
