Introductory
Activity:
Following the picture walk, the teacher will read the book aloud to the students. The teacher will ask the students if they think that this story could be real or if they think that it is make-believe. A discussion will follow. The next question will be, "If a pet or person has diappeared or is lost, what steps can we take to find them?" Many suggestions will be offered. Hopefully, one idea will be to put up a poster with the individual's picture. The activity that follows will be the creation
of a wanted poster for the Gingerbread Baby. Each student will create
their own poster. "Wanted" or "Lost" will be written in large
letters at the top of the paper. Next, students will be directed
to look closely at the cover of the book and make their own approximation
of the character.

Enabling
Activity(ies)
Students will sponge paint on a tagboard gingerbreadman form. It should be around a foot tall and precut or traced on the tag prior to the activity. They may decorate the man the following day with buttons, rickrack, stickers or whatever items that you think will make a terrific gingerbread person. This could make a great bulletin board or just a fun take home project. Children can make their own "Gingerbread House" from graham crackers cream cheese or frosting and assorted candies. Children can work with parent-helpers to
mix and bake the "Gingerbread
Baby Recipe".
Students will
have an opportunity to go to the Jan Brett site and copy a mask of one
of the characters and cut it out for use in the class play ".
