Introduction
Students knowledge of Character Traits can be enhanced with the following activities. This knowledge will enable the students to understand themselves ,as well as their peers, all of their lives.

Education Code Section - 44790  -  Instruction on the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship - Young children and adolescents need to develop an understanding of , and an appreciation for, the need for a sound set of valued and principles that are consistent with their own and others' well-being in the school, the community,  the state, the nation and the world. 

Education Code Section - 44790.4b  -  The purpose of this chapter is to provide guidelines that encourage schools and school districts to provide programs in ethics and civic values that will foster the development of those values, traits of character, cognitive skills, and emotional capacities that are essential for ethical conduct and the achievement of the ideals of a democratic society.

Instructional Objectives
Students will be aware of various terms used when describing their own Character Traits as well as their friends.  Literature will be used to enhance and broaden their knowledge. The students will demonstrate their understanding through activities including writing, speaking, role playing, and drawing.

Student Activities

The following activities are arranged in a Target Teaching mode for  the greatest growth of each student.

Introductory Activity

 1. The teacher will read a well known story (Goldilocks and the Three Bears ).  After the story the students will fill in graph on the chalkboard - suggesting traits.  If none are offered the teacher will supply the following:

  Characters  Courage   Friendship  Sharing
  Goldilocks  yes  no   no
  Three Bears yes  no   yes

 2. Ask children to contribute words to an ongoing Character Traits chart. words might include: consideration, cooperation, courage, honesty, leadership, loyalty, patience, pride, perseverance, respect, sharing, thoughtfulness, and trust.

Enabling Activity(ies))

Culminating Activity

 1. Students will color and label a paper plate to demonstrate all of their Character Traits.  The plate represents 100% of the child....so the plate must be divided into amounts representing  ìstrongest/weakestî traits according to the size of the pie piece.
 2. Children will make drawings each week to coincide with the Character Traits of the week, (see #2 - Enabling Activities).  The students best effort for the semester will be scanned and placed on the web page for all to see

Assessment
1. Students participation in the planned activities, with the teacher, will provide part of the assessment. 
2. Students (in pairs) will role play a planned skit  demonstrating one of the Character Traits.

Results
After implementing your lesson (sometime between January & March), insert a chart of your pre-test, post-test, and culminating assessment data.
