Assessment Activity 1: Making A Freehand Map

Your freehand map of China must: 

  • contain boundaries for China
  • include correct placement of at least 20 cities or towns
  • include the original (World Was II times) spelling of names
  • be visually pleasing


Assessment Activity 2: Writing A News Article

Your newspaper article must:

  • provide brief background information on China
  • describe one of the areas about which information was found (i.e., China's population/economy/exports/political beliefs/cultural background)
  • be written in a clear, direct newspaper style
  • marshall evidence in support of a thesis--convey information and ideas from primary and secondary sources, recognize significant facts and ideas, use terms accurately, and be well organized


Assessment Activity 3: Writing A News Article

Your newspaper article must:

  • provide brief background information on Chinese immigrants to California
  • describe one of the areas about which information was found (i.e., unfair treatment/types of labor provided/the West's only all-Chinese town/early Chinese immigrants/etc.)
  • be written in a clear, direct newspaper style
  • marshall evidence in support of a thesis--convey information and ideas from primary and secondary sources, recognize significant facts and ideas, use terms accurately, and be well organized


Assessment Activity 4: Writing An Expository Essay

Your essay should:

  • begin with a strong statement which tells the reader that your composition will discuss the wartime experiences of the novel's characters
  • provide supporting details of the wartime events in China
  • show relationships between these events and the lives of the novel's characters
  • end with a strong conclusion and closing sentence
  • follow the standard conventions of English regarding spelling, punctuation, and grammar
