This lesson is designed to be part of a bigger unit on ecology.  Of all the organisms in a food web, the carnivores hold the most student interest and mystery.  In this lesson the students will explore the carnivores of different biomes on the different continents.  They will collect data on each carnivore, enter it into a database and analyze the ecological role played by these animals.  This same lesson design can then be extended to include the other members of an ecosystem (producers and herbivores).

5. Organisms in ecosystems exchange energy and nutrients among themselves and with the environment. As a basis for understanding this concept, students know:

a. energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers into chemical energy through photosynthesis, and then from organism to organism in food webs.

d. different kinds of organisms may play similar ecological roles in similar biomes.

At  the end of this lesson, the students will:
Define: producer, consumer, herbivore, carnivore, energy pyramid, top carnivore, detrivore.

Identify the major biomes of the world and locate them on each continent.

Create a database of the top carnivore for each biome on each continent to include: name of animal, where it lives, what it eats, a  picture, it's type of family structure, endangered.

Create and present a multimedia presentation (Power Point or HyperStudio) to reflect the similiarities and differences of the ecological role played by each top carnivore.
