  La Familia Real

Teacher lesson plan

Objectives:  After having given a short historical snapshot of the Royal Family of Spain -        

    • Introduce family vocabulary in target language

    • Students will be able to understand the family tree of the Spanish royal family.

    • Students will be e able to create a personal genealogy up through their third generation.

Materials:

    • Computer with access to the Internet 

    • Connected to TV screen via Video Gold to follow the lesson

    • Student worksheet.

    • Magazines and newspaper ads

Procedure:

  • Ask students to describe the picture of the royal family

  • Ask students to guess the relationships of the family members in the picture.

  • For homework: have students go to the site:
    http://www.casareal.es/casareal/familia.html  

  • and then click on La familia real and then select the indicated members of the royal family. (on student worksheet.)

    • Have students look for cognates.

    • Have students guess word meanings based on context.

    • Have students find specific information on 3 members of the royal family. (on student worksheet.)

    • Have students describe the 3 members of the royal family. (on student worksheet.)

    • Have students click on árbol geneológico de la familia real and answer questions about the family tree. (on student worksheet.)

    • Have students list the family member they identify with most and why.

Applications and Extensions:

    • Have students draw a picture of a member of the royal family and write a caption for it.

    • Have students create their own family tree.

    • Have students create a photo album of their family using either real pictures of family members or pictures from magazines.

 Instructional Objectives

  After viewing a photo of the Spanish royal family, and being introduced to the family vocabulary, the class will be able to identify the family members using the target language. 
      In addition, students will be able to identify their own family members through the 3rd generation using the target language.

 Student Activities

     Students will make up a set of flashcards representing the following family members: 

el abuelo, la abuela, el hermano, la hermana, el hijo, la hija, el tía, la tía, la madre, el padre, los nietos, la prima, el primo, el sobrino, la sobrina, el esposo, la esposa, la gemela, el gemelo, los parientes, los padres, la familia
